Vallance says the delta variant is increasing in the UK

The government’s chief scientific advisor, Sir Patrick Vallance, would not rely on ministers’ decisions on England’s roadmap, but noted that the “Delta variant is increasing in the UK”.

At a briefing for journalists at the G7 summit, Sir Patrick again suggested that even after the restrictions were relaxed, there would be “lasting” lessons from the pandemic.

“You can think of areas like continuous hand hygiene, testing is still important – and there is an opportunity to think about more regular testing for infectious agents, including applying it to the regular flu and other winter viruses as we expect increased pressure from the winter again Coronavirus.

“Self-isolation with symptoms, really important and will remain so – and I think that’s actually a lesson for all infectious diseases, to be more willing to take time out and isolate yourself in the event of illness.

“And ventilation is clearly important – ventilation in buildings is going to be extremely important.

“I think there are a few things to think about even after having passed the immediate problems that many countries are now facing.”
