Germany is said to have 1 million electric cars on the streets in July

BERLIN (Reuters) – Germany will have 1 million electric cars on the streets in July and will reach its destination six months too late, Economics Minister Peter Altmaier told Tagesspiegel on Friday.

“We will reach our goal of 1 million electric cars by 2020, which everyone believed to be unattainable, in July this year with only six months delay,” the minister was quoted as saying.

“In the first half of 2021, more bonuses were used than in the whole of the previous year,” he added and put it at 1.25 billion euros. Subsidies were increased during the corona pandemic.

Altmaier also said Germany could potentially surpass its longer-term goal of 7-10 million electric vehicles on its roads.
