Why We Can’t Stop Drooling Over The Mercedes-AMG GT Track Series

The Mercedes-AMG GT range is Affalterbach’s halo car at the moment. It is available on sale around the world in multiple variations at different engine performance specifications. AMG even races GT3 spec versions of the GT in various categories like the DTM German Touring Car Championship. The GT range arrived with standard GT, GT S, GT C, the revered GT R that was followed by the GT R Pro. There were a couple of convertible Roadster models along the way too. But the most aggressive AMG GT was the AMG GT Black Series. It is currently the only production version of the GT range to be on sale as the AMG-powered sports car seems to be on its way out.

However, AMG has developed a new special edition GT Track Series model that takes the sports car up to 11! The performance numbers are mind-numbing, and it looks angry with a point to prove. It’s love at first sight, and we just can’t stop drooling over it. Here’s why.

The GT Track Series Is Most Powerful AMG Yet

The Mercedes-AMG GT has been setting new boundaries ever since it arrived in 2015. Over the years, it has climbed to great heights and now in its final encore, the AMG GT Track Series is the most powerful AMG model ever sold to customers.

It continues to use the glorious 4.0-liter, twin-turbo, dry-sump V8 engine as the Black Series, however it makes a touch more performance. Like the GT Black Series, the motor uses a flat-plane crankshaft, a larger compressor wheel that makes more boost from the two turbos. The engine makes 733 horsepower and 627-pound feet of torque. It is a modest 3hp and 37 lb-ft in gains, but there is more to it.

The 7-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission has been thrown away. In its place is a race car spec Hewland HLS 6-speed sequential gearbox that channels the power to the rear wheels.

Furthermore, the GT Track Series also uses new Bilstein dampers with a revised suspension setup. The brakes have also been upgraded to massive 15.35 inches at the front and 14-inch discs at the rear.

The Cockpit Of The AMG GT Track Edition Is Unbelievable

Mercedes AMG GT Track Series 3

AMG looks to provide its customers with a full race car-like experience for the GT Track Series. Gone are the luxurious touches and any of the road car’s trims and features in the cabin. The driver’s cockpit has been reduced to the bare minimum starting with a brand-new racing steering wheel with switches and buttons within reach of the driver’s fingertips. The dash has been replaced with a panel that houses the emergency switches and the center console features more buttons to control the lights, fuel pump, and ignition. The ABS and traction control settings of the car have 12 levels of adjustment.

AMG has liberally used carbon fiber in the interior of the GT Track Series. The driver is fastened to the racing bucket seats with a five-point harness, and in clear view is the fully programmable BOSCH DDU 11 digital driver display that caters to all the needs on track including lap times and data logging. The interior is designed to meet FIA safety regulations with a protection roll cage, fire extinguisher, and a driver extrication hatch on the roof.

The AMG GT Track Edition Looks Like A Beast

Mercedes AMG GT Track Series 4

The GT Track Edition looks very much like the GT Black Series. However, AMG has worked tirelessly to help shed some weight. The diet has been so severe that the Track Series is said to weigh in at just 3000 lbs. AMG has achieved this thanks to the extensive use of carbon fiber on the interior, and the exterior as well. The front hood, the door sills, fenders, and many other components on the GT Track Series are made out of the lightweight and rigid material.

As far as styling goes, the GT Track Series looks to be more inspired by the GT3 race car. It features similar aerodynamic elements that we see on the hood and the front bumper. The massive two-step rear wing is similar to the Black Series but is said to be tuned to deliver even more downforce. Similar to the race cars, the GT Track Series sits on 18-inch sized milled and forged alloy wheels.
