Porsche has entered into a cooperation with BASF to introduce the next generation of lithium-ion batteries, which could find a place in the upcoming electric models from Porsche worldwide. BASF was selected by the Cellforce Group, a joint venture between Porsche and Customcells.
It might not be long ago that sports cars and electric powertrains might not go together, but almost every major sports car manufacturer has recently launched or announced EV products. The Taycan EV from Porsche is a prime example of why the present and future of mobility is battery-powered. However, in order to further improve the performance of such vehicles, Porsche is looking at BASF for high-energy HED-NCM cathode active materials that contribute to high-performance battery cells for fast charging and high energy density. Production is expected to start in 2024 and these batteries will initially power around 1,000 motorsport and high-performance vehicles.

Automobile manufacturers like Porsche have to manage the balancing act between vehicles that continue to inspire and at the same time are CO2-neutral. “The battery cells – especially the cathode-active materials – are at the center of our considerations. We are very pleased that we are working with BASF to bring an environmentally friendly cell technology to series production, ”says Michael Steiner, Member of the Management Board Member for Research and Development at Porsche AG.
It is easy to understand why Porsche relies heavily on electric drives. His Taycan EV was well received in the markets in which it was launched. In fact, the Taycan EV is reportedly approaching the sales mark of the legendary 911. The company sold more than 9,000 units of the EV in the first quarter of 2021 alone, and Porsche naturally wants new-age batteries to deliver the performance that its vehicle already offers long expected
