EV fast charging stations need more urgency – says The Yorkshire Post

The shortage of truck drivers is a case in point – remedial action could have been taken if Brexit, Transport and Food Ministers had worked together.

When it comes to the provision of charging points for electric vehicles after approval, the law must also be changed in order to make this mandatory for all new residential and office buildings.

Why, just a few weeks in which the UK is hosting the COP26 climate change conference, isn’t this already the case when the Yorkshire Post has been arguing for some time that new buildings need to be future-proofed at the planning stage?

The provision of fast charging points for electric vehicles is being questioned.

From flood-proof designs to bicycle parking facilities to charging stations for electric vehicles, since diesel and gasoline cars are phasing out, this should already be done by default.

The fact that the ministers of transport are now likely to have to use Robert Jenrick’s housing department, which is responsible for planning and other matters, to make the necessary changes does not bode well.

And there is one more point. As noted by Sheffield MP Clive Betts, Chair of the Community Committee of Parliament, there is evidence that some sites do not have enough power for “quick” charges.

While Transport Secretary Rachel Maclean responded by saying that his concerns were addressed in “our infrastructure strategy” and “consumer experience consultation”, she did not provide a sense of urgency – or policy coordination. More is a shame.
