She was previously chairman and CEO of the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission, the nation’s largest regulator for rental transportation.

President Joe Biden announced on April 14, 2021 his intention to nominate Meera Joshi, an attorney with over 16 years of experience leading government regulatory agencies, for the key position.

She has served as the Assistant Administrator and Senior Officer of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration since Biden’s inauguration on January 20, 2021.

She previously served as Chair and CEO of the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, the nation’s largest regulator for rental transportation, where she led novel Vision Zero campaigns using data tools to keep high-risk drivers and unsafe vehicles off the road.

She also led policy guidance, including establishing robust open transport data standards for app-based providers; Adopt nationwide first wage protection program for hired drivers and provide wide access to rented transportation for passengers who use wheelchairs.

Prior to regulating traffic, Joshi was Inspector General of the New York Department of Justice, responsible for investigating corruption and crime at all levels of New York prison operations.

She also served as First Assistant Director of the Civilian Complaint Review Board of New York City and directed police misconduct investigations.

In addition to her government positions, Joshi served as General Manager for the New York office of Sam Schwartz Transportation Consultants and was a visiting scholar at the Rudin Center for Transportation Policy at New York University.

Joshi was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She holds a BA and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania.
