BROOKLYN, NY – Sam Bird took a commanding victory in race two of the FIA Formula E New York City E-Prix on Sunday afternoon at Brooklyn Street Circuit.
Jaguar Racing’s Bird started from pole and dominated the race, beating Nick Cassidy by more than four seconds to the checkered flag on Sunday. The win follows a frustrating race for Bird Saturday that prompted the Jaguar Racing team to redesign their racing car.
“You never give up, you always go ahead with the team, you always believe in yourself, you believe in the equipment down here, and you just go ahead and do the plan,” said Bird. “And we did. Today just perfect. So proud of everyone. “
Bird’s teammate, Mitch Evans, ran on the podium for most of the race but hit the wall at turn four late in the race while trying to stop Cassidy, Antonio Felix da Costa and others. Evans’ car was badly damaged and he dropped from second to fourth place. He hobbled on with his car and finally came 13th.
Da Costa finished last on the podium after the incident with Evans. Pascal Wehrlein was fourth, followed by Andre Lotterer in fifth.
The victory catapulted Bird to the top of the Formula E standings, where he is now five points ahead of da Costa.
